Most browsers today are fast enough that raw speed rarely settles the decision anymore — the meaningful differences are in the underlying engine, privacy defaults, extension ecosystem, and who's actually behind the browser and what their incentives are.
Chrome: the widest compatibility, the weakest privacy defaults
Chrome remains the browser most websites are built and tested against first, so compatibility issues are rarest here. It also has by far the largest extension library. The tradeoff is that Chrome is made by a company whose primary business is advertising, and its default privacy posture reflects that — it's usable and configurable, but you're doing more manual work to limit tracking than with a browser built privacy-first from the ground up.
Firefox: the independent choice, with a genuinely different engine
Firefox is one of the only mainstream browsers not built on Chromium (the engine underlying Chrome, Edge, and Brave), which matters beyond just philosophy — engine diversity is genuinely good for the web as a whole, since it keeps any single company from unilaterally deciding how web standards evolve. Firefox's tracking protection is strong by default, and it's developed by the Mozilla Foundation, a nonprofit, which changes its incentive structure compared to an ad-funded company. It occasionally hits compatibility quirks on sites over-optimized for Chromium specifically, though this has become less common as it's improved.
Edge: Chromium-based, with genuinely useful built-in extras
Edge is built on the same Chromium engine as Chrome, so it shares Chrome's compatibility and extension-library strengths (it can even install most Chrome extensions directly). Microsoft has layered in some genuinely practical additions — a capable built-in PDF editor with fill-and-sign tools, and vertical tabs that some users find easier to manage than Chrome's horizontal strip. As a Microsoft product, its data practices are governed by Microsoft's privacy policy, similar in kind to Chrome's Google-driven equivalent rather than a fundamentally different model.
Brave: privacy-focused by default, also Chromium-based
Brave blocks ads and trackers by default at the browser level, without requiring a separate extension — a meaningfully different default posture than Chrome or Edge. Being Chromium-based, it retains strong compatibility and can use Chrome extensions. Brave's built-in cryptocurrency and rewards features are optional and can be fully ignored if they don't interest you; they don't affect the core browsing and privacy functionality.
