Storage capacity is the number every listing leads with, but it's often the least important spec once you're comparing drives in the same rough price range. Here's what actually determines whether an external SSD will be fast and reliable for what you're using it for.
The interface determines your speed ceiling
Before looking at any specific drive, check what port and interface it uses, because this sets a hard limit on speed regardless of how good the drive itself is:
- USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) โ a real-world ceiling around 400-500MB/s. Fine for backups and general file storage.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) โ up to roughly 1,000MB/s. A good sweet spot for most people, including light video editing.
- USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps) or Thunderbolt โ 2,000MB/s and up. Worth paying for only if you're editing large video files directly off the drive or moving huge datasets regularly.
Also check what port your actual computer has โ pairing a Thunderbolt drive with a laptop that only has USB-A ports means you're paying for speed you can never use.
Sustained speed matters more than the marketing number
Manufacturers advertise peak burst speeds, achieved briefly before the drive's cache fills up. For short transfers โ most everyday use โ this number is roughly accurate. But for large, sustained transfers (a big video project, a full system backup), speed can drop noticeably once the cache is exhausted. If you regularly move very large files, look specifically for reviews that test sustained write speed, not just the advertised peak.
Drive-based vs bare NVMe + enclosure
Pre-built external SSDs are simpler and usually have better thermal design out of the box. A growing alternative is buying a bare NVMe drive and a separate USB enclosure โ often cheaper per gigabyte and sometimes faster, at the cost of doing your own assembly (which is genuinely simple, usually just sliding the drive in and tightening a screw). This route is worth it if you're comfortable with a small amount of DIY and want to save money or reuse a drive pulled from an older computer.
Durability features actually worth paying for
- IP-rated water/dust resistance โ genuinely useful if the drive travels with you regularly, less relevant for a drive that mostly sits on a desk.
- A metal or reinforced enclosure โ SSDs have no moving parts, so they're inherently more shock-resistant than old external hard drives, but a solid enclosure also helps with heat dissipation, which affects sustained speed.
- Hardware encryption โ worth it specifically if the drive will hold sensitive data and might be lost or stolen; software-based encryption (like BitLocker To Go or FileVault-encrypted volumes) is a free alternative that works nearly as well for most people.
How much capacity do you actually need?
Buy for your actual current use plus modest headroom, not an imagined future need โ SSD prices per gigabyte continue to drop, so a drive that feels like the "smart, future-proof" choice today is often not meaningfully cheaper than buying the right size now and a second drive later if you actually need it.
