Every rechargeable battery degrades over time โ that's chemistry, not a defect. The question isn't whether your laptop battery has degraded, it's whether it's degraded enough to justify doing something about it. Here's how to actually check, rather than guessing from how the laptop "feels."
Check your actual battery health, not just runtime
Runtime feels convincing but is a poor diagnostic on its own โ it changes with screen brightness, what's running in the background, and how you're using the machine that day. What you actually want is the battery's measured capacity compared to when it was new.
- Windows: Open a Command Prompt and run
powercfg /batteryreport. It generates an HTML report showing "Design Capacity" versus "Full Charge Capacity" โ the ratio between them is your real battery health. - macOS: Hold Option and click the Apple menu โ System Information โ Power, which shows "Cycle Count" and "Condition." Apple also shows a simpler battery health percentage directly in System Settings โ Battery.
As a rough guideline, most laptop batteries are rated for around 300โ1,000 full charge cycles before dropping to about 80% of original capacity, depending on the battery chemistry and how it was used. Below roughly 80%, most people start noticing a real difference in daily runtime.
Signs beyond the health percentage
- Sudden shutdowns at a battery percentage well above 0% โ a strong signal the battery can no longer deliver consistent voltage under load.
- Swelling โ a trackpad that's become slightly raised, or a laptop that no longer sits flat, can indicate a swollen battery. This is a safety issue, not just a performance one; stop using the device and get it serviced.
- Charging that never quite finishes, or a battery percentage that jumps unpredictably, both point to a battery that's no longer holding a stable charge.
Simple habits that slow degradation (if you're not there yet)
If your battery health is still reasonably good, a few habits meaningfully extend its life:
- Avoid keeping the laptop at 100% charge plugged in for very long stretches when you don't need to; many modern laptops and macOS itself now include an "optimized charging" feature that manages this automatically.
- Avoid letting it sit at very low charge (under 10-20%) for extended periods, especially in storage.
- Keep it out of high heat โ a hot laptop degrades its battery faster than one that runs cool, so check that vents aren't blocked.
DIY replacement vs a repair shop
Whether you can replace the battery yourself depends heavily on the specific laptop model. Many mainstream laptops (particularly recent MacBooks and slim Windows ultrabooks) use adhesive-mounted batteries that require careful disassembly and specific tools, and DIY attempts carry a real risk of puncturing a lithium battery cell, which is a genuine fire hazard. Older or business-oriented laptops (many ThinkPads, for example) are often designed for easier battery access. Before attempting a DIY swap, look up a teardown guide specific to your exact model โ general advice doesn't account for model-specific screw locations or adhesive.
If disassembly looks involved, or your model uses a glued-in battery, a repair shop is the safer and often not much more expensive option once you factor in the risk of damaging other components.
When replacement isn't worth it
If the laptop itself is more than six or seven years old and already showing its age in other ways โ slow performance, an outdated port selection, discontinued software support โ a battery replacement alone may not be worth the cost. In that case, the battery health check above is still useful information: it tells you whether battery degradation is the main problem, or whether the whole machine has simply reached the end of its useful life.
